Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Since she was the only child, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott studied at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She was hoping to be a English teacher at the high school level. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit college after three year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. She began her career by performing live poems and her own work. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. In Roots' show, she revealed herself to be an artist. Then, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. In the Canada tour of Rent, the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the first signing artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
